The dry eye condition is becoming very common nowadays. It may be due to the more workload on our eyes than ever before. Today’s lifestyle requires more work on our eyes, be it due to the laptops, smartphones or the ever-evolving technologies leading our generation of all our equipment’s.

The main symptoms of dry eyes are given below:

  • Foreign-body sensation in the eyes
  • Itching sensation in the eyes
  • A feeling of dryness in the eyes
  • Occasional redness in the eye especially when exposed to light and dust
  • Pain in the eyes
  • Eyestrain

Very soon, the above symptoms give way to more serious stages of the disease. As the condition progresses, patients experience blurring of vision. Patients also start to experience difficulty to focus on bright objects and unable to work on Computers/laptops/tabs for a long time. Their ability (duration of work without feeling tired) starts to decrease. In many cases, disturbed sleep is also an associated symptom.

The Reason for the development of dry eyes are very varied, and we cannot pinpoint it to a single factor. As mentioned earlier, overwork to the eyes, stress, tension, defect in tear secretion, eyeball surface layer damage, atmospheric pollution, presence of systemic diseases, all influence this condition. In short, any factor that may influence the fluid system of the body may cause dry eyes.

As mentioned above, the reasons for dry eyes are very varied. Hence, so are the treatment for dry eyes in Ayurveda. For the correct treatment of dry eyes, the basic reason that has caused dry eyes also has to be considered. According to Ayurvedic science, Vata is the predominant vitiated factor for this condition. Hence, a suitable Vata Samana treatment is the preferred line of treatment for Dry Eyes. By this treatment, eyes can be made lubricant and moisturized.

The aim of ayurvedic treatment for eye are:

  • Clearing the channels so that circulation and thereby nourishment of the structured are able to be maintained.
  • To activate the glands and to ensure that the normal secretions for moistening the eyes are produced correctly.

Some of the main treatment procedures that are usually selected for dry eyes are Sirodhara, Sirovasthi, Nethratharpanam, Brimhana Nasyam. Kindly note that these are very generic information and the exact procedures are to be selected with caution. The medicines for the procedures also have be selected with due diligence and care. They should be in tune with the clinical stage of the disease, dosha prakriti of the patient and most importantly, the basic reason for the disease.

At Matha Ayurveda Eye Hospital, this is achieved by a systematic protocol of patient diagnosis as per the ayurvedic science. This is started off by a detailed initial assessment of the patient. This initial assessment is followed by the diagnostic procedures to ascertain the level of intensity of the dryness in the eyes. Then, patients meet with the senior physician / Chief Physician and a care plan is arrived upon. The care plan consists of the treatments, duration, medicine and expected results, which are explained in detail to the patient.
